Christmas in July is the perfect excuse for a party! “If you’re hosting a Christmas in July dinner, turn it into a special occasion by going all-out festive with your home décor,” says interior stylist at Find It Style It Lauren Keenan. “Because it will be cold in most parts of Australia, this is your perfect chance to ramp up the winter wonderland vibe that the northern hemisphere gets to enjoy in December.”
Read on for interior stylist Lauren Keenan's luxe tips on styling your own Christmas in July party.
“For a traditional Christmas table setting choose a base colour – either red or green - for your table and other decorations,” says Keenan. “Then pick your metallic accent colour - gold or silver. Red and gold are a match made in heaven, but remember that not everything has to be fire-engine red; for a more modern Christmas look choose accessories in a rosy pink to create a soft, romantic feel. If you’ve chosen green as your base colour, different shades such as emerald and mint work really well. Team it with silver or white to create a perfect modern Nordic Christmas scheme.”
If putting up a Christmas tree and tinsel feels a step too far at this time of year, it’s still possible to give a nod to traditional decorations without decking out your whole home in Christmas chintz. “Dig out your favourite baubles and stack them in a large glass vase so guests can see them as they arrive,” suggests Keenan. “Make the most of the winter evenings and boost the cosy atmosphere by dotting candles around the house and dining table. Choose votives with touches of gold or silver to play up the yuletide look.”
Whether you’re having a sit-down dinner or a buffet lunch, simplicity is key when it comes to dinnerware on a Christmas in July table. “Chic white plates will highlight a menu,” says Keenan. “If you’ve chosen red as your base colour then brass cutlery will contrast really well. If you have a green scheme, classic silver cutlery looks great, or a matte black set will give a lovely modern twist.”
Give your table a mid-year Christmas twist by adding some greenery. “Put small holly plants in plant pots that match your colour scheme, then spray the leaves with gold or silver paint,” suggests Keenan. “Artificial plants can also work really well for this sort of occasion. Choose a few stems with blooms to match your colour scheme and either trail them down the table, or pop a few in a vase to put the finishing touches to your table.”
It wouldn’t be Christmas without gifts. “There’s no need to go overboard for Christmas in July but a small gift on each guest’s plate, beautifully wrapped to go with your chosen colour scheme is a lovely finishing touch to the table setting.” Small items such as candles, soap, or fun books that are a talking point around the table, are always well-received.
